A superb lifetime impression in bistre ink on chine appliqué to Holland laid paper with HP Hallines watermark from the extremely rare first edition of 1862 before the letters. Signed in the plate. Full margins.
Les Gitanos was not Manet's first attempt at etching. But Les Gitanos was his first etching to be published. Several lifetime and posthumous editions of this etching exist. In its first appearance in September 1862 , Les Gitanos was part of the first folio published by the Société des Aquafortistes that Cadart had just created to promote modern etching. The folio included etchings by Corot, Daubigny and Jongkind, among others. The prints were available in a regular edition of unknown size printed with the letters and in a luxury edition of only 25 impressions before the letters.
