A very beautiful impression in bistre ink on chine appliqué with full margins from the posthumous edition of 1905. Edition of 100.

In 1855, Manet made two copies, one in watercolor and one in oil, of a painting, Réunion de treize personnages (Gathering of thirteen persons of rank), then attributed to Velázquez at Musée du Louvre, Paris. Several years later,  during his productive years as  a printmaker in 1860-62, Manet came back to the painting which had made a profound impact on his work and executed this etching after his copy in oil. Manet was particularly proud of this etching, which he considered his most successful. Manet exhibited both the copy in oil and the etching several times. The etching was first published by Cadart in 1862 and published again in 1863 and 1874. There were also three posthumous editions in 1890, 1894 and 1905.
